"Cherry-Red Lipstick"

Doris makes her corn souffle for the pot luck at the church
62 and single… her love life’s been a curse
Vernon was an awful liar
Now he’s seein’ that soprano from the Sunday choir
But Doris is a wholesome girl… and that makes it hard to flirt.

There’s that Single Seniors Bible class she’s never tried before
'Cuz it's a meat market melting pot… sanctioned by the lord
She’s feeling like she needs a change
Though some folks might think it’s strange
She’s bathin’ her lips in red and headin’ out the door

CHORUS
Adios miss prim and polite
Say hello to the queen of the night
Those cherry red lips are lookin’ sweet
Like a propane stove she’s got instant heat
Lord knows how this night will end
But sho’ ‘nuff it’ll begin with the cherry red…. lipstick

All the heads of the Seniors turn when Doris hits the door
The soprano from the chamber choir’s never been so jealous before
She whispers… She walks in here like Jezebel
That lipstick color is straight from the fires of hell
Doris says…no… it’s the color of the Blood of Christ shed for you and me

CHORUS

Vernon pats the place at his right and begs her to take a seat
Hot dish in hand, she struts right by and his old heart skips a beat
Maybe it’s the corn soufflé
But I will bet you any day
Those boys hooked on those ruby lips and Doris, sassy sweet

CHORUS

She scoops a heapin’ helpin’ of soufflé and plops it on Vernon’s plate
He says he’s sorry for the fool he’s been and asks her for a date
She says, “Vernon , honey, that’s awful sweet
But you might wanna’ take a seat
These lips are only for breakin’ hearts and you’re just too doggone late."

FINAL CHORUS
Adios miss prim and polite
Say hello to the queen of the night
Those cherry red lips are lookin’ sweet
Like a propane stove they give instant heat
But tonight she’s playin’ cards with her friends
Cuz’ she’s just a little much for those men in her cherry red…. lipstick
