Happy Birthday To Us
As if last
year's surprise party wasn't enough, our host family decided to throw us a
special bash, Guatemalan-style. We had just come back from a trip to the
high mountains of Guatemala with a youth group
from Houston. There, Scott spent his birthday (June 8th) hauling big
bags of mulch up a 60-degree incline to help out with a reforestation
project. Gabby's birthday came three days later in Antigua, where the
atmosphere was a bit more relaxed. In the middle of all of this, our host
brother Edwin turned 21!
When we finally got to Cantel on
the 12th, we crashed. The next morning, we woke up early to accompany our
younger brothers to the annual carnival for the town. There, we played
some really old, broken video games and some rip-off carney games. The
boys walked away from the rip off games having "won" a couple of
squirt guns. It was a good time.
We got back to the house at about
1:00 to find all of the rest of the volunteers waiting for us. In
addition, Joe and Selena made the trip, and a handful of Guatemalans who were
happy to celebrate with us. They grilled meat for us (knowing how much
Scott loves grilling), and bought a tres leches cake. It was much more
than we even expected, and we were thankful for the special day. Thanks
Gang!
