What Mission Means
I knew this would be a special
trip because Brian was going to be reunited with his mom after 10 months in
Guatemala. And it was great to be able to share that with them. But it
was special for me too. It was a chance to be with a group of people who
really know what MISSION means.
It's not about the money you give
or the fact that you took vacation to be here. Granted, those things are
important but they aren't what really changes you. What changes you are
the people, the smiles on the children's faces, the shared belief in Christ and
having a woman invite you into her home to show you all the work she has done as
a single working woman in Guatemala. It's sharing the experience with
people for the first time and learning from them how to be a better Christian,
friend and leader.
The East Dallas Cluster is made up
of nine Presbyterian in the Dallas area. It was decided that their
Presbytery was just too large and that smaller groups of churches should get
together and support each other. So with a little nudge from someone who
had been to Guatemala on previous medical mission trips, this partnership was
born. Five years later and it is thriving. The group is supporting
two pastors by paying half of each of their salaries, a nutrition project that
has taken 20 children from underweight to normal, and with each visit they visit
a different community and help in some way. This trip we painted a church,
lead a women's bible study and a children's vacation bible school for two
days. We welcomed in children from the community and not only those from
the the church. It was a special week full of sharing and love.
