Teaching English in Chuisuc
Every Wednesday we go to a small
community called Chuisuc. They have a public school there which, due to
funding problems, is only open in the mornings. The education system here
is very interesting. You'll hear more about it later... but now... let's
just focus on the kids.
Since they have to take english
classes in junior high (if they can afford to pay tuition... the government only
pays for your schooling through 6th grade), they really need a head start.
On Wednesday afternoons, these bright faces come of their own free will to learn
from anyone who is willing to spend time with them. Heck... today... even
their TEACHER was in class with us. We started with the basics... parts of
the body, directions, colors, etc. By the end of class, we had the kids
doing the Hokey Pokey, singing Head & Shoulders, Knees & Toes, and even
singing a spontaneous song about colors that we made up on the fly.
In the end, we both got alot out
of the experience. Wednesdays are good days for us volunteers in
Guatemala. Life is good.
